Fuel pump electrics

Now I can access the fuel pump, I am puzzled by the fact that there appears to be no fuse relating to it. My handbook does not list a fuel pump fuse, and there is none visible in the wiring local to the pump.
   
   Is this normal?
   
   Is this desirable?

If memory serves me correctly isn't there a inline fuse or a circuit breaker up in front on the passenger side foot box where the fuse box is for the fuel pump ?  I replaced the pump a while ago.
