Carburettors for early Aces

Dear all,

With some time on my hands I started looking into the carburettors on my car AEX 31. The ones that are fitted in my car are SU H2 with the carburettor body bearing the number PDC 3229q.

This is a early type of H2 carburettor that hasn't got any damper in the dashpot.

I guess that these are the original type for my car but since I'm not a 100% sure I started wondering what type that are fitted to other early cars. Anybody out there that can tell me what type their cars have fitted? If you do reply, please also give the chassis number of your car please.

Grateful for any response on the subject.

Kind regards Jonas

Jonas,
The carburetters on AE 22 are also PDC 3229 Q although I wonder if that is just the casting number of the main body. The black plastic caps on top of the dashpots (note plastic not brass) are marked 'use thin oil' so there is some degree of damping. These instruments are the ones she left the works with in 1954.

Barrie,

Thank you for the information. It would seem that the carburettors 31 has got are the original ones then. The caps on my engine are brass though, hexagonal with a very small hole...

Part of the reason for my question is that two of the carburettors I've got are rather worn, the butterflies don't close as well as the should. Maybe not that strange since my car has done more than 75000 km. Consequently I'm looking for new ones.

So if anybody out there have one, or two carburettors that they could consider parting with please let med know. It's enough with the carburettors body with the PDC 3229 Q casting number.

Barrie, I've seen the progress on Instagram that's been made with 22. I have to say it looks spectacular. Congratulations on that.

Jonas,
Here is some more information, kindly provided by Keith Lessiter. Worth filing if you have an A.C. engine. Sorry about the page orientation - they are all the right way up on my computer, but 'Postimage' has a mind of its own and my limited IT skills cannot find a way to correct the page orientation (I can see another thread coming shortly, are you there Nik Bagshaw?) however I console myself with the image of thousands of A.C. Owners around The World trying to stand their laptops on one side or another. Then again there is the image of the laptop on the floor with The Owner lying horizontal. A position which has much to recommend it......

P.S. AE 22 is back in my workshop, but is so beautiful, thanks to Steve Gray and his team at A.C. Heritage, that I am frightened to go near her as I am bound to drop a screwdriver or spanner on the aluminium and cellulose.

Attached are the images reoriented (I hope!) at Keith's request, plus one extra page to cover the Thermo carb.....

There is a set of H2 carburettors for sale by a member, Burlen have overhauled them so should be good!
They are about the same cost of buying a new set but have the manifolds with them.
A key issue apart from the butterfly & spindle is the rate at which the piston drops, they need to meet a controlled time & all be the same!
I have recently purchased sets of triple H2 & H4 carburettors for the Weller engines from Burlen, they do take some time for deliveries.

Dear Barrie and Robin,

Thanks for your replies. I've been away for a couple of days so sorry for my late reply. Much appreciate your input. I did have my carburettors restores by Burlen,
I did ask them to keep the original bodies which might have been the wrong call...

I believe the carburettors for sale are a later version, AUC 700 and not the PDC 3229Q bodies that the earliest cars seams to have come with. I believe that AUC 700 bodies came at least as soon as early on in 1955.

Thank you gentlemen.
