ignition switch

Can anybody tell me what ignition switch is on my early 1984 Mk1V.
   
   I am having starter reliability issues. Have removed starter, and that tests o.k. New battery is fitted, so not a lot of options left.

   If it is the same as my 1985 car it is Rover SD1 (the column shroud is rectangular with two 'storks' plus a light-switch on the opposite side to the key).
   
   I believe Rimmer Brothers repatriated all the SD1 parts that went to India so would be worth a try (www.rimmerbros.co.uk)

Thx for your reply John, but regretably not. Mine has a rounded profile with a single stalk out of the right hand side with the key switch on the left.

Lateral thinking...could you fit a start button on the dash, probably save a lot of time & effort?

   could you post or send a picture from your column cover and stalk? Sounds like MGB but without picture its all theory :-)

Nick  does it have a remote starter solenoid? If so could that be the issue rather than the switch?

Hi, can somebody at ACOC please make it simple to add pictures. When I hit the 'add image' button all I get is (IMG) appearing in the text box.
   
   The help window associated with the 'add image' button is completely unintelligible to me.
   
   I would very much like to post pics related to this thread, but am unable to figure it out. Maybe I am the only one, but I doubt that.

Hey Nick,
   the pics are not that clear, are the covers trimmed / covered in leather or artificial leather? Especially the left side looks somehow familiar to me but can't remember. If nobody will come up with some help you need to lower the steering column, disassemble the covers and ignition switch and find some OEM numbers on it.

The Indicator stalk (and the central warning light cluster) are Triumph from the 2.5PI era it looks to me (the steering column shroud is not the same) so perhaps that's the source of the ignition switch?

I think its time to disassemble it, and see what turns up.

One last point, the early cars have a solenoid starter switch inside the fuse and relais compartment in front of the passenger footbox. Have you checked that switch for function ?
   You will directly see if some voltage at the input connector is comming  from the ignition switch.
   
   If you can' see(by test light) or measure voltage at the input connector you have a faulty ignition switch or connector.
   
   I had the same problem caused by a bad bullet multi connector between ignition switch and main wiring loom. With the years the connectors corroded and the plus wire was completely burned.
   
   That happend to the former owner who repaired the connector with Hi Fi gold connectors and adding a push button starter.....
   
   
   I had to cut some wires out and replaced them by new material.
