I have an ancient set of Pirelli P Zero Tyres on my Mk IV which must be 25 years old. They still have good tread, but I would worry about travelling at the national speed limit on them for any distance! I have seen all the Mk IV "hot shoe" drivers are using Avon CR6 ZZs, so I thought I had better join the club. The Pirelli sizes are 275 rear and 225 front, so I was thinking of the same in the Avons with 275/55/15 and 225/65/15s. I see there are also 295 and 245 sizes available. Has anyone tried them, and do they clear the arches OK? My instinct is to stick with the traditional sizes, or am I missing a trick?

Hi Shep, the Avon ZZs have fantastic grip, however, they are extremely sensitive to flatten while standing. Already short periods lead to uncomfortable vibrations. So, keep your Mk IV moving. Kind regards from Frankfurt

My car was factory fitted with Eagles, 255/60/15 rear and 215/60 front.

Now on Avons for 2 years 275/60/15 rear and 225/60 front.

Car has no binding issues, but, is set up as it left the factory, and not to look like a racer.

Agree car needs to be used regulalry to avoid flats. The tyres use what is basically a race compound so v. soft.

Do not expect more than 7k miles.

   Best of luck

I have the 275/225 Avon combination on mine and am very pleased with them.  I believe Bob Langley  fitted 245s to the front and had problems with clearance.   The Rears on mine caused some fouling problems initially on hard cornering but suspension adjustments by Big Al solved all that.   The wear rate is quite high - but is a good trade off for the improvement in grip.

Hi Shep

This was my forum notification Sept 2012.

BMTR Birmingham have just received their latest new size Avon CR6ZZ 225/60 15 diameter is 25" rather than the Avon CR6ZZ 225/65 15 diameter is 26.65" which should reduce potential fouling of the GRP front inner wheel arch liner under extremes. The larger rear tyres 275/55 15" diameter is 26.9".

Prices are on the BMTR website http://www.bmtr.co.uk then click on Motorsport. Next day delivery for 4 tyres is £20 + VAT. If you phone them ask for the Motorsport department and ask for David or Peter. They are very helpful.

I have both 225/60 & 225/65 and I prefer the 225/60s and they do not fowl on the inner wheel arch liners. The 225/65 will ware holes in your fibre glass liners. I think you will find the 275s are best suited for MkIV provided your suspension/coils are uprated or not too soft.

You will find they are like riding on a carpet in comparison to your old over hardened rubber boots.

Andy, I fitted 245 to the front but had to take them off as they fouled the wheel arches and wore a hole through in the end and I replaced them with 225s.

Flyinghorse

CRS9513 had 245/60/15 CR6ZZ at the front and 275/55/15 at the rear (all CR6ZZ). They were fitted by previous owner (Bruce). There was minor rubbing on the front fibreglass inner wings. You may have driven the car set up like this Andy if I recall my conversations with Bruce.
