Check out these pics of a psychedelically painted original Cobra...or more precisely, an AC 289 Sports...which I found over on some of the U.S. Cobra forums.

This particular car, chassis COB6107, was painted for London socialite and Guinness heir Tara Browne by Dudley Edwards, who was part of the British pop art group BEV which also included Douglas Binder and David Vaughan.  Browne's Cobra was displayed at the Robert Fraser Gallery in Mayfair, London, just six weeks before his untimely death in a car crash (driving a Lotus Elan).

At the time the following pics were taken for the Dec 27, 1966 issue of LOOK magazine the car wore the registration plate GYK 768C.

Tara Browne's death is thought to have served as the inspiration for the Beatles song, "A Day in the Life."  Tara's father was Dominick Browne, a member of the House of Lords for 72 years.

He blew his mind out in a car,
He didn't notice that the lights had changed,
A crowd of people stood and stared,
   They'd seen his face before,
   Nobody was really sure
If he was from the House of Lords.

Jump to 1:50 of the following YouTube video to see Tara Browne driving COB6107 through downtown London:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQJCXIF7q_c

COB6107 car is now painted solid purple and wears U.K. reg plate KPK 392C.

I wonder whether these regtangular stop/tail lights (Lucas 542) are the original equipment by factory.
Didn't the 289 Sports had the two seperate amber/red round ones (Lucas 691)???

   Would really like to know!

nikbj68

I believe there were only 2 fitted with these lights, they must have found them at the back of a cupboard!!!

According to the SAAC Cobra registrar, the rectangular tail lamps are known to have been used on only two AC 289 Sports models: specifically COB6106 and COB6107.
