Without plowing (correct for a canadian) through umpteen books trying to find the answer, do any of the "historics" recall if all or some of the leaf sprung mk1`s had rack and pinion steering?.
   Thanks

Members have the answer in the Cobra Register on the Club's website: 'After 126th car the Ace Bishop worm and sector steering box was replaced by a Cam Gears rack and pinion system'.

The Register records AC making 654 leaf spring (MkI) Cobras between 1962 and 1966.

I resent being called 'historic'. Must be a Canadian thing :)

Thanks for that.
After my brain aneurysm rupturing, I even forget my wife`s name Gus, never mind what cars had what!!
I had written prehistorics Trevor,  but decided that might be pushing it too far.
Look forward to meeting you all at Goodwood.

Banter aside, what I really was trying to determine is,1. Was the  mod made on the cobras first.  ie a possible Rem requested mod or were the Aces/greyhound etc produced with 6 cylinders at the same time the first testing bed ie Turner mod?I know as far back as 1953 the show chassis had a Morris rack but then AC  fitted the worm and sector for some reason, probaly monetary BUT was the return to rack and pinion a CSX thing or a local ie Bex, or A etc PREFIX. and what was the first car to receive the treatment? If not 127.
I incorrectly said COB or COX Which fall under cobras.Apologies

Interesting that you mention Greyhound in there, as the entire chassis & suspension is unlike Ace or Cobra, but does have rack & pinion(don`t know from which parts bin they came though!). The AC 'Bible' does record CSX2127 as being the first R&P Cobra.

I was browsing Rinseys `AC in detail` and saw on page 232 his mention about A86 ,altho` not a leaf sprung ,it  got me thinking. what took so long to convert the cobras and did AC test it first on other leaf spring cars? Not sure what the last 2.6`s had

The tojeiro prototype chassis had R&P, but the parts bin at AC was filled with Steering boxes, so what to do? Just schlepp them on there until we run out...

GAHHH!!! Yes, I did, dumb fat fingers!
To reference back to the title of this thread, the first of the COX & COB Cobras was 'ex-works' in October `63, whereas CSX2126 was from around March/April, so they would have been some months into R&P by then.

CSX 2126 is listed as the rack & pinion prototype and CSX 2127 the first production rack & pinion car - from "World Registry of Cobras & GT40s"

I believe you have hit the nail on the head with CSX2126 being the first car with rack and pinion steering.

nikbj68

BUT.... If you start counting from CSX2000, 2126 is the 127th Cobra... [;)]
All I knows is I meant to type 2126... honest!!!
