Hi, l have recently bought AC 2 litre reg. number HAX666 and it has come to me with no paperwork whatsoever, not even a V5. l was told it has been owned by 1 family from new and is known to the AC club.
Does anyone have any knowledge of this car? l am new to AC ownership so will be asking lots of questions in the future.

Hi Trevor?

I assume you were the buyer at Brightwells auction.

Looks to be a nice car.

Well done on buying an under appreciated classic.

You will always get a reply on here though limited numbers with 2 litres saloons.

If your a member of the club now you should contact Tom Dine he is the 2 litre registrar.

What part of the the country you in.

Good luck with owning and driving.

Gary

Hi Gary

Thanks for the reply. Yes l did buy the AC from Brightwells as a none runner but have now got it running. l will need to do the usual recommissioning before using it in anger.
Do you know where l could obtain any information on maintenance etc. for this model?
I have not yet joined the club as the subscription runs from March, so l will join then.
I live near Stafford in Staffordshire.

Hi Trevor,

I will try and photograph my original AC owners handbook and put it on here give me a day or so. I think these are available as reprints  from the Club as well.

However, get to know your grease gun well, there are many nipples.

Ah too far North for me I am down on Kent Sussex border.

Cheers  Gary

Had a thought Ian Strange's website on the 2 litre is very useful and if you read through the maintenance section I believe he covers all if not most of it.

Do get a good grease gun with a good angled neck.

I have include a link to the above website page.

Hi Gary

I have looked at Ian Strange's excellent site but it does not mention basic things like where the dip-stick or oil filter are or the fact that the petrol tank has a tap on it.

Hi Trevor

The oil filter is the large orange container near the exhaust if a later fram one from a 1951 fitted if not its down by the dynamo sticks out from the side of the engine down by the sump with a nut on top. and from memory the diptstick a tiddler with a T type handle right down under the carbs by the sump.

Been along the since I had an AC engine in my car.

Good Morning Trevor,

Congratulations that looks like a fine original car!  It is known to the club and has been since at least 1991 when the owner joined the Club stating that his Father had bought it new on 3rd December 1948.

L997 is an early Saloon, the post war series started with L800 and is fitted with the Moss rear axle.  Later cars had the ENV axle hence later cars have an EL chassis number.  It also retains the early form of Lucas side light (L461 I think) rather that the later L488 type.  It came out of the factory in National Grey livery, a colour which covers a multitude of shades, with beige upholstery and was supplied to Alfred Chaston Ltd for the first owner J.E. Jones of Pontllanfraith.

The illustration shows the position of the dipstick and is from the Manual, the club have reprints for sale.  As Gary says the oil filter is on the exhaust side under the dynamo.  I doubt if a Fram filter would have been fitted to your car, unless as a after market addition, as they were only fitted from 1951 ish.  My Saloon did not have one (1950) but my brothers (1951) did!

I hope you enjoy the car,
Tom

Hi Tom

Thanks for your reply. I am keen to find out as much as possible about the car as it seems to be a good unmolested example, although l would not describe the current colour as grey. I was told that it was repainted in a shade of green very close to the original.
Thanks to Gary l have now located the dip stick and oil filter, which is the early type. The AC still has all the tools in place and even the oil can and grease gun under the bonnet but l am missing the bonnet fixing bracket under the windscreen. I assume this was removed to change the battery and never replaced, do you know where l would be able to get a replacement?

Hi Trevor are you talking about the the centre bonnet chrome strip hinge bracket?  Maybe a pic of where the missing item should be would help and I will look in my boxes of many bits and bobs for the AC.

If you can't get pic on here send it to me by email.  click on mail link.

Hi Trevor,

It certainly looks unmolested and original from the pictures I have seen, it even seems to have the blind for the rear window.

AC used a selection of colours for the Saloon which were all termed grey.  My Saloon was Birch Grey (see attached) and was a cream colour!  A lot of Saloons were National Grey which was a green colour which varied in shade from a light green to fairly dark grey/green.

The one tool that was not obvious, because of the angle of the shots, was the stirrup pump, usually on the right side of the boot, was one fitted and if so is it still there? I would be interested in the make and model if it is there.

Which bit of the bonnet fixing is missing?

All the best,
Tom

trev1948

Hi Tom

There is a pump in the car but there is no brand name or any writing on it. I have tried to send photos. but the site will not allow. A rear window blind is still fitted and seems to work.

Trevor

Trevor are you attaching the pic with the attachments bit below, if not try it, if you, your pic is probably too large, you will need to resize it down.

That's an offer from Bob that's worth taking.
