Mine is looking really rather tatty. It's some sort of coir matting, coming apart and held on at one point with bailer twine.
   
   Any suggestions for what and where to source as a replacement? Is one even necesary?

I would check with Moss motors! They might have similar material. My car has the same stuff on top of the gas tank!
