I think this is self-explanatory.  There is also a link to the online petition.

If you've not seen these petitions, you may want to add your name to
   them:

   National Speed Limit reduction http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/noNSLreduction

Introduction of Average Speed Cameras http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/No-to-Cameras

It  would be nice to think our signature might count, but I doubt there's any point. However, it's always better to say something
   rather than suffer in silence.

Ah, the ever increasing encroachment of governments on our lives.

Coming from Europe, now living in the US, I always watch the Brit car shows with envy for the beautiful drives on nice winding country roads. Anyone who's been over here knows that's a rarity and that's why cars here can weigh 12000 pounds and are unable to turn with impunity. There are few winding country roads.

Anyway, I thought it was rather well established that speed does not kill. Lack of driving ability does. Therefore the Germans can go as fast as they want and still have half of the highway fatalities we have here in the US. (remember: no turns, big wide open roads) So the argument that speed is somehow the direct cause of the high death rate on country roads is questionable at best and to hang that up on a study that shows correlation without cause is a scary thing. Because, after all: a large percentage of highway deaths occurs on roads with traffic lights or telephone poles. Same correlation: why not remove those and keep the speed the same? That's what pisses me off about government intrusion: it defies logic.

Anyone remember that show about driving under the influence of a doobie? www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3zou4F00Ic

Maybe a stretch, but it drives home the need for educated decision making...
