Drag on the clutch - Weller engine Aceca

I am having a problem with crunching gears!   The clutch on my Weller powered Aceca is not properly disengaging.  So far we have tried,  adjusting the clutch so there is almost no free play with no noticeable effect.  pumping the pedal doesn't improve things and the slave cylinder was replaced last year, when the clutch was also bled.   There does not appear to be any oil on the fly wheel so doesn't look like  oil is making the clutch plate stick.  Any thoughts on what else to try other than engine out!!   I assume the engine has to come out to do the clutch?

Oil would make the clutch slip.
I'm assuming you have checked the clutch plate operation via the inspection plate.
There are various things that could be your issue
Type of gearbox oil used
Synchro
Clutch release bearing
Clutch plate and diaphragm
Gearbox input bearing to crankshaft.
Usually the gearbox can be removed and leave engine in car though a lot of the interior may have to be removed.
Someone with an Aceca / who's done it before will hopefully answer your question.
You don't say if it's a standard or lightweight gearbox.

Are the master and slave cylinders of the correct size?
Master 5/8", slave 7/8"
If the sizes are incorrect you may not be getting enough travel on the release bearing,
meaning that the clutch is not fully disengaging.
I'm afraid that the shape of the Aceca bulkhead makes it impossible to withdraw the gearbox far enough into the driving compartment to expose the clutch.

OK thanks Luke, looking at master cylinders for sale on line I am getting mixed messages as to whether it should be 3/4" or 5/8"  for a 1955 AC engined car.  Any thoughts?

Klassik Metall

I've double checked and a 5/8" master cylinder is correct for a 1955 car with a Moss gearbox.

I was thinking more about your issue- your not very clear about what gears are crunching as the typical mosss box has no synchro on first, and can have poor synchro on 2nd, with double declutching beinng required.
Many ( jaguar/ Morgan owners) change their box for a full synchro replacement.
It could be your clutch is fine but lack of synchro or way you are changing her means clusters still moving inside.
Many say it's sensitive to oil type ( not sure if your in a hot country or uk) but Redline MTL suggested. Again need to take care if running overdrive as they can share oil in some cases.

When you say crunching gears are you indicating that all gears crunch? Do they crunch if you double declutch? If not then it is your synchro rings that need replacing or the oil is too thick. Some people think that gear oil goes into an old gearbox ie EP90 ,engine oil is used and 30 years ago I use ATF oil with a moss box for hillclimbes with overdrive for quicker change and to today it is still working with no issues.
I suggest you drain the oil and replace with a modern 10/40 oil as an easy start to see if that helps
