AC brooklands steering rack

Hi out there
Anyone good any idea what the steering rack came out of?
My rebuild of M40 ACE isn't getting any easier. It must have been parked in the sea somewhere.

Hi Alistair,

I confirm I did indeed buy two REMY Steering Racks for a 1989 Volvo 740 2.4, and fitted them to both my cars. It was so successful on DE1102 that I decided to replicate it on DE1105. The ratio was ever so slightly different but it significantly reduced the steering 'twitchiness'.

The only thing we had to do was to swap the steering tie rods from the old rack to the new, as they were longer on the replacement racks (not sure of the donor vehicle for the tie rods but probably a Volvo of some description).

I obtained both racks from my local Eurocarparts.com back in 2015 against their catalogue number 603660060 @ £211.97 ea including an exchange surcharge of £89.99. However, they don't seem to stock them anymore.

Wally's comment on the spacers is valid too. DE1102 doesn't have them and enjoys a reasonable turning circle albeit with the tyres rubbing on the lower wishbones. DE1105 does have them but the turning circle is a bit challenging if I'm honest!

I thought I'd also mention that both my cars are the later (series 3?) Ace which has a modified (wider?) front subframe to accommodate the Quadcam engine. (I'm not sure if the earlier cars used the same rack.)

the original ones were from Ford Sierra, I have been told.

I fitted some nice aluminium collars to reduce the lock to reduce scrubbing and any rubbing on the arm. one of the original foam spacers had gone awol.
