1961 A.C. GREYHOUND BRISTOL 2+2 COUPE
Registration No. CSU 181
Chassis No. BEF 2519
Engine No. 100D2 1104
Silver with blue leather interior.
Engine: six cylinder, 1,971cc, 127bhp at 6,000rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual; Brakes: four wheel disc; Suspension: front, independent, wishbones, coil springs, rear, independent, trailing arms, coil springs. Right hand drive.
The A.C. Cars factory had thought it desirable for some years to supplement their strictly two-seater, so that the family man who needed further accomodation could remain loyal to the marque. After much expeimentation with various mechanical and body configurations, the new Greyhound 2+2 seater was unveiled at the 1959 London Motor Show.
The chassis frame and suspension departed from the normal pactice in that the main frame was now of rectangular tubes. Coil springs and rack and pinion steering were also introduced. Various engine types were available including the high performance Bristol 100D2 which is fitted to this stunning car. The handbuilt aluminium coachwork is enhanced by the interior finish that is equal to far more expensive cars, including reclining front seats with fine Connolly hides and a burr walnut dashboard. The Motor road tested a similar car which obtained a top speed of 104mph and 0-60mph in 11.4 seconds. The testers enjoyed the close ratio gearbox, general standard of roadholding, ride comfort and returned a petrol consumption of 20mpg.
Chassis number BEF 2519 left the factory during 1961 consigned to an A.C. dealer in Bedford who used it as his own car. It was subsequently stored for many years until 1987 when it was sold to G.B. Car Centre who sold it to its present owner in 1988. At 21,000 miles the speedometer was replaced and the present reading of 9,500 means that this car is still a relatively low mileage vehicle which is reflected by the overall excellent condition of the car.
