Thanks for your reply Graham. The engine has not been rebuilt, which is why I thought it best to avoid a highly detergent modern oil.

There will be an ACOC area at the VSCC Vintage Day Out on Sat 9 August. Anyone who wishes to join us please contact me immediately on john.davison517@btinternet.com so you get a ticket for access to our area and plans to find it.

If you are intending going to the VSCC celebrations with your AC I have provisionally booked some places so we can have an ACOC area together, but I still need names urgently. Please contact me at john.davison517@btinternet.com as a matter of urgency or I will have to forfeit our space.

I have always used "Bernie The Bolt" who has a tremendous range in virtually all normal threadforms in HT and Stainless. It is some years since I have bought from him, and although Googling Bernard F Wade produces his contact details the web site www.bernie-bolt.com seems to have vanished. Address is Bernard F Wade, PO Box 1865, Oxspring, Sheffield, S36 8BY, Phone 01226 370860, Fax 01226 370836 or Email berniebolt@talk21.com.

AC Weller Engine / Rocker cover breather
August 03, 2013, 22:09:03
I do not know about the need for a breather on the rocker cover for the road, but is not a breather and catch tank mandatory for competition? AE413 has a breather from the blanking plate on the crank case where the dynamo fitted on earlier cars.

I would like to attend this year, as I was unable to make it last time. Will let you know any topics in plenty of time.

General Forum / MOT: Testing times ahead ?
August 25, 2012, 18:09:46
This certainly looks problematic for all except high volume production cars produced since type approval was introduced. Even then there may be variations between assemblies at a detail level below which spares were originally supplied. The French have had a system of type approval since the very early days of motoring, curiously operated by the Dept of Mines.

For cars like ours, made in very small numbers and with bespoke customer requirements fitted by the factory it is hard to see there is a definitive standard of production. Strictly speaking many ACs fail to meet even the MSA criteria for "Specialist Production" due to the very small numbers. However we cannot be alone and the FBHVC are the people to co-ordinate this for us.

Glen,
There should not be anything holding the inner pins once the nuts are removed. They are very tight and will need plenty of penetrating oil, heat and hammering using a suitable drift to get them out.

The photo of the car with the pond in the background is at West End, a mile or so SW of Esher.

Setscrews hold the outer rear wishbone pins and are in the upright, facing the centre of the car.

Ace, Aceca & Greyhound Forum / AC Clutch
October 20, 2010, 18:45:07
Julian, Would that be AE76 that required a new clutch release bearing? If so I replaced it in about 1972 with one from Thames Ditton but its a bit late to take it back and complain now. Pleased to hear the car is still around.

I know it is rather a long time since your question about what oil to use on the cone clutch, but in case you have not found out yet it is "Neatsfoot oil". Google on that and you will find plenty of sources.

Is it possible the position of the release bearing operating lever and the clutch cylinder lever have moved relative to one another? I recall having a similar problem but in my case the clutch did not operate at all. I corrected it by moving the clutch slave cylinder operating lever round on the shaft and reclamping it. Engine removal was not necessary.

I used to own AE76 in the 1970s, and I am 99% sure that it had the round type of rear lights, and the long boot lid.

Thanks, Robin. Paul could not supply just the bushes, so I bought a complete striker, his part numer is 602N. While many reproduction parts are often slightly poorer quality than originals, I can honestly say this is indistinguishable from the original one. At £24.40 it is probably little different in cost from having the original one replated.
